Why the north?
Northern Italy concentrates what most couples want from a honeymoon: water (the lakes and the Riviera), a city on water (Venice), wine and food (Piedmont), and vineyard hills (Tuscany at its southern edge). Getting around is easy: fast trains between cities, short drives between regions.
The classic mistake is combining north and south in one trip. Rome alone deserves 2-3 days, and the onward journey to the Amalfi Coast eats half a day each way. If you choose the north, stay north.
Our route: 7-10 days
Days 1-3: Venice. The city on water is a perfect three-night honeymoon stop: a late-afternoon gondola, dinner in Dorsoduro (far fewer tourists than San Marco), and a day among Murano and Burano. Full guide: our Venice guide.
Days 4-6: Lake Como. Train from Venice to Milan, then a rental car or train to Como. Base yourselves in Bellagio or Varenna, ferry between the villages, visit the historic villas (Villa del Balbianello), dine over the water. October brings perfect weather and thin crowds.
Days 7-10: Tuscany or Piedmont. Here the paths split: Tuscany for couples who want villa-with-pool countryside; Piedmont (the Langhe) for wine lovers - Barolo, Barbaresco, and hills that look painted.

Where to stay
Venice: San Marco costs more and sleeps worse. Castello or Dorsoduro give you the real atmosphere for 20-30% less - see where to stay in Venice.
Lake Como: the eastern villages (Bellagio, Varenna) are cheaper than Como itself and have the real views. Piedmont: an agriturismo (farm stay) with its own restaurant is the best way to experience the Langhe. Tuscany: a villa with a pool in the Val d'Orcia, a short drive from Siena.
When to go
May to June: the sweet spot. Full sunshine, warm lakes, no August heat yet. September to October: the second-best window - harvest season in Piedmont and Tuscany, perfect temperatures. July-August: hot, crowded, peak prices. December: Venice turns magical in the fog, but the lakes are empty and cold.
What it costs

The honest advice
Don't rent a car for Venice - you can't bring it into the city anyway. Take a car only from Lake Como onwards. Don't over-collect lakes: one Lake Como beats three rushed lakes. Book restaurants ahead - Italy doesn't improvise: the good tables fill up weeks in advance.
