Winter
Capodanno, Capri - New Year's Eve
Capri celebrates New Year's Eve with live music, DJ sets, acrobatics and spectacular fireworks. The action centres on Piazza Umberto I, where dense crowds pack the square. Accommodation on the island needs to be booked well in advance.
Carnevale in Venice
Venice acquired its international reputation as the city of Carnevale in the 18th century, when festivities could begin several months before Lent and the whole city seemed to become one continuous masquerade. The celebration was revived permanently in the 1970s. Each year, more than a half-million people attend the 15 to 17-day period, which ends on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, for concerts, theatre and street performances, masquerade balls, historical processions, fashion shows and contests. Spring
Festa di San Marco in Venice
April 25 is the feast of Venice's patron saint and also commemorates National Liberation Day, a national holiday. On St. Mark's Day, men traditionally give the women they love - wives, mothers, sisters, cousins and friends - a bòcolo, a long-stemmed red rose. Tradition says that a longer stem expresses a deeper token of love. The legend tells of a soldier in love with the doge's daughter who was mortally wounded in a distant battle; as his blood spilled, it became red roses, which he asked a companion to carry to the girl. The story never says whether the flowers arrived on the saint's day, but Venetians celebrate the miracle on April 25. Freelance flower sellers appear throughout the city, while the stand in Piazza San Marco is a better place to buy a bòcolo because it supports the Red Cross. Scoppio del Carro in Florence
On Easter Sunday, Florentines and visitors gather in Piazza del Duomo for the Scoppio del Carro. A huge carriage, decorated for the occasion and pulled by 2 enormous oxen, travels through the city centre before arriving in the piazza. An elaborate system of wires sends an object shaped like a dove from inside the cathedral toward the baptistery across the way. The dove triggers fireworks that stream from the carriage. Vinitaly in Verona
Vinitaly is a major international wine and spirits event in Verona, held for a few days in April. Recent editions have drawn more than 4,000 exhibitors from 2 dozen countries. The programme opens with Opera Wine, a presentation of the top 100 Italian wines selected by Wine Spectator. It takes place at the Palazzo della Gran Guardia in Piazza Bra. Biennale di Venezia
In spring, every 2 years in even-numbered years, the contemporary art world and curious visitors spread through Venice's Giardini pavilions, the dockside warehouses of the Arsenale and scattered palazzi. Milan Design Week
For 1 week in April, Milan hosts the design world's largest gathering. The Salone di Mobile is the centrepiece, an unusually large furniture fair staged in the cavernous Fiera Milano exhibition centre and extended through dozens of venues across the city. Regata Storica delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare
This historical pageant puts 4 boats on the water. Each has 8 oarsmen and represents one of the medieval maritime republics: Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa or Venice. Summer
Arena di Verona Opera Festival
During the Arena's summer season, from June through August, as many as 16,000 spectators sit on the original stone terraces or in modern cushioned stalls. The productions are usually large and spectacular, including Aida and Turandot, with huge choruses and, when possible, camels, horses or elephants. Order tickets by phone or through the official Arena di Verona website. If you choose the cheaper terraces, take or rent a cuscino for the stone seats.
Festa di San Giovanni in Florence

Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto
Each summer, Umbria hosts one of Italy's biggest arts festivals in Spoleto: the Festival dei Due Mondi, or Festival of the Two Worlds. It began as a classical music festival and grew into one of Italy's brightest gatherings for arts aficionados, with a broad programme of modern and classical music, theatre, dance and opera. Luminaria in Pisa
Pisa is at its most atmospheric for the Luminaria feast day on June 16, which honours the city's patron saint, St. Ranieri. Palio in Siena
Twice each year, on July 2 and August 16, Siena turns medieval for a bareback horse race around its main square. The official Siena municipal Palio page is the current reference for the event.
Festa del Redentore in Venice
On the third Sunday in July, crowds cross the Canale della Giudecca on a pontoon bridge built every year for the occasion. It commemorates the doge's annual visit to Palladio's Chiesa del Santissimo Redentore to give thanks for the end of a 16th-century plague. The main street-and-water celebration begins the previous evening. Venetians, joined by a growing number of visitors, set tables and chairs along the canals; as night approaches, almost the entire city moves outside and thousands more take to the water. Boats decorated with coloured lanterns and stocked with traditional Redentore meals compete for the best view.
About half an hour before midnight, fireworks begin above the Bacino and cast brilliant reflections across the water. Good viewing places include Riva degli Schiavoni, Zattere as close as possible to Punta Dogana, and the Zitelle end of Giudecca. After the display, you can join younger Venetians for an all-night celebration and greet sunrise on Lido beach, or rest before the Sunday morning procession to Mass. Fall
