The big three - St. Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace and the Campanile - reward advance booking, and in season it is all but essential. Reserve once your travel dates are locked in; you'll receive an e-ticket carrying a QR code to scan on arrival, then join the pre-booked entry queue instead of the pay-at-the-door line (a security check may still wait ahead). Guided tours dodge queues at many sights too. State museums across Italy are free - and swamped - one or two days each month, typically a Sunday; steer clear of those days in season.
