Cards, cash and ATMs
Know your four-digit PIN, tell your bank you're travelling, and pull a little cash from a bank-run ATM - which Italians call a bancomat - after landing. Give the independent exchange kiosks a miss and always refuse 'dynamic currency conversion', which quietly inflates the rate.
Tipping and the access fee
Tipping is low-key - a servizio line item usually appears on the bill already, otherwise a couple of euros per person or rounding up is enough. The day-visitor access fee Venice trialled since 2024 is no longer charged: from 27 July 2026 the historic centre is entered freely, with no payment or exemption request. Any future reintroduction depends on the city council - watch the official Venice Access Fee portal. Non-EU visitors may need to register with ETIAS first.
VAT reclaim - non-EU visitors only
If you live outside the European Union, keep your receipts: spend more than €155 at a single participating shop and you can reclaim most of the 22% VAT at the airport before you fly home. EU residents don't qualify.
