The island is the magic; Mestre is the money-saver. Barely 51,000 people call Venice proper home, and most visitors flood in to see the famous sights and rush back out - so sleeping on the island gives you the calm, glowing city of early morning and late evening. Venice also charges a tourist tax of €1–5 per guest per night, set by the hotel's star rating and the season. Doubles span roughly €90 for very basic rooms to €400 with Grand Canal views, most landing between €140 and €180 with a private bathroom.
