The climate is mild: winter settles around 5°C, summer tops out near 29°C, and the lagoon keeps the air humid year-round. Acqua alta - the famous high water - is an autumn-and-winter phenomenon, so check the tide forecast then. Spring and early autumn are the sweet spot: gentle days, lovely light, thinner crowds. Whatever the season, pack for walking - bridges, stone and canals - and bring a refillable bottle, since the public fountains deliver pure mountain water piped down from the Alpine foothills.

The short answer for 2026: late April to early June and late September to October give you the best mix of weather and walkability. If your dates are fixed, don't worry - Venice rewards every season differently; what follows is what each one actually feels like.

When to go, season by season

• ✦Spring (March-May): the classic pick. 13-22°C by May, long evenings, wisteria on the balconies. Easter week is busy; book beds ahead.
• ✦Summer (June-August): hot (up to 29°C), humid and at peak crowding. The compensations: sunset lagoon swims off the Lido, open-air cinema, evening passeggiate. Sightsee early morning and after 6pm.
• ✦Autumn (September-October): warm seas, 19-24°C, harvest festivals on the mainland - many locals' favourite window. Acqua alta becomes possible from late October.
• ✦Winter (November-February): fog, 1-8°C, the year's highest tides - but also empty calli, Carnevale in February, and Venice at its most cinematic. Bring real waterproof shoes.
